The morning of The Jay Race, the tiny town of Capitola was overrun by paddlers. Tents lined the beach and people were everywhere. The event drew competitors from all over, especially since it had suddenly become a Stock national team qualifier. Following words of prayer, encouragement and remembrance from Kim Moriarity and Frosty Hesson, the race began with optimal flat water conditions. The sun was out and the ocean was plate glass. The race was taken out at a blistering pace by Marina Del Rey’s Max First (Bark) who ultimately won it, followed by Roch Frey and George Plsek of San Diego (Bark). Shearwater’s Nick Franco finished a respectable 4th place on his 18’6” Flatwater UL, right behind Plsek. Josh Ryan, on his brand new custom 18’6” Flatwater UL, flew to a 7th place finish. Dave Benet, on a 2016 17’4” Flatwater UL had his best finish ever with a 9th place result. Another strong showing from the team and another great event in the books.
